Novice Race Report (Moorhead Trophy):

The novice race was held above the weir along the Trinity Regatta course. DULBC won the coin toss earlier on in the day and chose to race on the North Station. UCD had a very fast start and had around a quarter of a length around the first bend. Around the Boohouse bend UCD’s lead stretched out to one and a quarter lengths. This distance was maintained to the Army. DULBC lengthened out, hit their rhythm and started to inch back and were half a length down going into the Minute Mark, coming out of this bend half a length up. From here to the finish (Trinity Regatta finish) DULBC maintained this lead, winning by two lengths.

Senior Race Report (Corcoran Cup):

The Corcoran Cup was held down in the Docklands, starting at the Sean O’Casey Bridge and finishing at the East Link: a straight course at a distance of 1,200m. DULBC had lost the coin toss earlier on in the day and were on the South Station, as UCD had chosen the North. We had a clean start, went off long and hard, with UCD overrating us. We got out into our length and rhythm quickly and by the second minute had a lead of about half a length. UCD did a couple of pushes, taking a couple of seats off us. We held our length, didn’t panic, and managed to maintain our lead of half a length to the end. Delighted to take the Corcoran Cup back to Trinity after six years of UCD dominating this race.

I would like to thank UCDLBC and Eoin Craven for excellent competition and a great days racing.

It is so exciting that in just over a week Colours will be upon us once again. It does not seem that long ago that we were sitting on the start line of last year’s race, surrounded by the hype, roaring and cheering of supporters and passers-by on O’Connell Bridge.

This year the race will have a different feel to it as we are now racing from the Sean O’Casey bridge for 2000m out past the East Link Bridge. This course can be seen to be fairer than the historic course that ran from O’Connell Bridge to Heuston. The new course is completely straight, with no tactical advantages for different stages of the race depending on what station you are given.

After two days of seating racing in Islandbridge two weekends ago, the Corcoran Cup senior women’s crew has been selected. It is a young crew, with only two of the oarswomen having raced Senior Colours before.

As this weekends Boat Race finishes on the Tideway over the Championship course Oxford and Cambridge can take a break. Meanwhile here in Dublin, the somewhat smaller events of the Gannon Cup as well as the Corcoran Cup, Moorhead Cup and Dan Quin Shield will have crews from UCD and Trinity competing in the Dublin Docklands Colours Regatta.

The race with the longest history and that has been the main focus of supporters over the last number of years is the Gannon Cup contested by the top crews from Trinity, the current National Champions at Senior 8s and UCD the Intermediate Champions from 2008. The other events on the day are the Corcoran Cup for the Senior Ladies from the two universities and then the Dan Quinn Shield for the Novice men and the MoorheadCup for the Novice women. For details of race start times.

This years race has generated quite a bit of interest as a result of the new course. This course starts at Sean O’Casey Bridge and heads eastbound towards a point past the Eastlink bridge. This new course will hopefully help to bolster spectators by drawing in crowds from the IFSC, hence the seemingly unusual start time.

Before this years race there will be a drinks reception on board the MV Cill Airne from 17:00 all welcome just email us with your intent to attend at gannonalumni@gmail.com

Other than that we hope you enjoy this years event and that we have a great days racing

The Committee
